Hello everybody, so I am sitting at the ford dealer for an oil change (it’s 95 degrees out and don’t feel like breaking out the ramps on the asphalt of my driveway...).
The service guy proceeds to tell me about a 30K service that needs to be done. I’m at 33,xxx miles ow. This surprised me because when I look in the owners manual, I see this...
This shows nothing about a major service... $400 for a college kid is a major service IMO. I looked at the list and couldn’t find anything warranting $400, but that’s a debate for another day.
Here is what the ford service guy printed out for me...
I can always take the car to my local technician who my parents have gone to for 25+ years. They are a no BS, tell you what needs to be done kind of shop.
I do to know oppo, what are your thoughts on all this? If this was a service REQUIRED, why wouldn't all this be listed in my owners manual? Is it just a ploy to get more money...

This is why I prefer to do minor maintenance in a garage with friends, it’s not hard to do most of the time and only a small bit messy. Granted, it’s probably nice having them replace the cabin air filter, top off the fluids, rotate tires, do a quick inspection, oil change, and recharge the AC system all in one spot.

MOA lifetime engine supplement? So they want to add snake oil for 400$?
Ford usually offers “The works” oil change and inspection for I think 70$? Air filter and cabin filter for *maybe* 25 each. More than that and I’d say do it yourself. This is a ripoff. A good independant shop should do it all for 200$ or less. Ford’s dealerships should be doing it for under 200$, even if they are checking things like the A/C although normally you don’t touch the A/C on a two to four year old car unless it has a problem

That is a money grab right there! Also I would not want solvent in my windshield washer reservoir. It looks like all you need is an oil change, then run down to Autozone and get a new air filter.

These were my exact thoughts! Like really an engine additive that I could probably pick up at the autozone check out counter on sale!? Why the fuck would I pay y'all $400 for this. And the A/C runs fine! It's a brand new not even 2 year old car. Everything is fine. Why a $400 service?

Have an airaid cold air intake good for 75000 miles no cleaning, do plan on cleaning it at 50K but it still looks great from a visible inspection.
So literally an oil change...

40$ for the oil change and basic inspection. Look for “The works” and print off the coupon and go to a better dealer. Watch as your service gets cut in half, or less. Also I’d report to ford that they have a dealership adding unapproved additives. I don’t think the Ford engineers wanted that gunk being used in an engine with 33k on it.

If this is “Recommended Maintenance: Modified (30K2)“, might one inquire what “Recommended Maintenance: Not Bullshit (30K1)“ is instead?

Yes.
IMO the manufacturer puts what is necessary in the owner’s manual the dealership is trying to make money of inflated BS.

Ask the dealer if it has any effect on your warranty if you don’t complete this service. You could call it more an inspection than a service because what they do is just look at everything on the list and tell you what needs to be done (you can do the looking part yourself probably).
My parent’s Skoda has these inspections scheduled together with the oilchange whenever the car calls for it and in exchange they get a warranty on the mobility of the car (you can call the dealership every single time the car leaves you stranded or something like that and the dealer takes care of everything at no cost for you other than parts).

It looks like a $400 inspection with no real benefit.

Idk what a Ford cabin air filter looks like (all my Fords never had one) but I just cut up a HVAC filter to use on my Subaru...
Don't do this for the engine air filter, obviously.

Definitely just trying to sucker you into paying them more money. When I take the wife’s Focus in to the dealer they do all of the inspections and top-ups for free. The only thing I have to pay for is the oil/filter and the air filter.

“The Works”, at my local Ford dealership, is $39.95. It includes most, if not all, of those things like oil/filter change, brake inspection, air filter inspection, etc... There is literally no reason to pay $400 for all of that. My fiancee got her Focus ST an oil change yesterday, and at ~52,000 miles the air filter was looking pretty grubby. $25 for that on top of $36 (discount from the $40 I guess?) for the oil and filter and ‘multi-point inspection’ and she was on her way.
That $400 bill? That’s why people call dealerships “stealerships”.

This is where I bought my car...total opposites from new car sales to service.
I’m glad someone at ford can corroborate my BS meter...
I got the works done! Half that stuff should be part of the $40 I just paid!

Completely agree...the new car sales part was completely professional and did not get the “trying to f you over” vibe.
Service department is a whole nother story

It sure as hell should be.
And I helped launch The Works in foreign markets (unless you have a coupon or mail in rebate, don’t go get the works, your local shop will check everything they do in The Works for less money man).
Always remember this. Dealerships make money in the service lane - NOT IN THE SHOW ROOM.
The new car sale is there primarily to start a relationship to keep you coming back.
